• Life Story: ² John Corrothers lived and died near Derry, Province of Ulster, Ireland. There is only one incident of his life that we are acquainted with. He served as a sailor on the British Fleet under Admiral Boscawen and was taken prisoner by the French near Gibralter, about the year 1759. He was kept in a French prison for years. When he returned home, he came destitute of clothing having only a piece of an old rug which he wrapped around him. He married a Miss Sommerville of Londonderry, Ireland. She was of Danish descent, her ancestors came to the British Iles with William the Conqueror at the time of the Norman Conquest.

• Life Story: ² John Corrothers was born near Londonderry, Ireland in the year 1759. At the age of 14 he left home and entered on a sea faring life. He was under Admiral Rodney during his celebrated West Indies Cruise. He was present at the great naval engagement of April 12, 1782 when Rodney defeated the French and took Count De Grasse prisoner. He was married in 1785 to Catherine McCalla. He emigrated from Londonderry in August and after a six week voyage landed at Wilmington, Deleware in Oct. 1789. He settled on Crooked Run in Green County, Pa. From thence he moved to Indian Creek in Monongalia Co., W. Va. Thence the neighborhood of Smithtown in same County. He died Aug. 15, 1834. He had 9 children, Henry, Elizabeth, John, Andrew, Catherine, Rebecca, Jane, Robert and Mary.

John's paper work follows his illness from the 1880s until his widow died as she filed for widows benefits after he died in 1900. He enlisted in the 1st. Battery Kansas Vol. Light Artillery Sept 20,1863 in Gardner, Johnson,Kansas he was discharged Jan.27,1865 in Tennesse, his rank was Sargent 1st.
John suffered from Rheumatism so bad that his hands and feet were twisted and all his joints were swollen. He also suffered from heart, liver, stomach and bowel trouble.
He was 6 feet 1/2 in tall, Auburn hair, blue eyes, his weight veries from 110 lb to 130 lb over the time period. He was bed ridden and unable to eat or care for himself for 12 years.
