John's paper work follows his illness from the 1880s until his widow died as she filed for widows benefits after he died in 1900. He enlisted in the 1st. Battery Kansas Vol. Light Artillery Sept 20,1863 in Gardner, Johnson,Kansas he was discharged Jan.27,1865 in Tennesse, his rank was Sargent 1st.
John suffered from Rheumatism so bad that his hands and feet were twisted and all his joints were swollen. He also suffered from heart, liver, stomach and bowel trouble.
He was 6 feet 1/2 in tall, Auburn hair, blue eyes, his weight veries from 110 lb to 130 lb over the time period. He was bed ridden and unable to eat or care for himself for 12 years.
