20 John "Jack" Corothers, Clear Lake, SD to Ken Runquist, e-mail, Nov 1 2003, "Corothers & Variants Family"; privately held by Runquist; Hi All,
You do not know how happy I am to make the acquaintance of relatives that are actually researching Corrothers!!
Melba and I have been working on the name since 1960. We have talked to many people that had knowledge to share; but, none were researching until I met Chrisin 2002. That is a 42 year drouth!!!!
Just to be sure we are all on the same page and not talking apples and oranges in reference to the same people.
Collectively I call you Monongalia John's Family. Monongalia John too me is the John Corrothers m. to Catherine McCalla that had nine known children in what I think the order of birth was: Robert (James) Corrothers m. unknown; Henry Corothers m. Sarah Lour/Lowe; Elizabeth Corothers m. Philip Huffman; John Corrothers Jr.m1 unknown, m.2 Nancy Wilson; Andrew Jackson Corrothers m. Elizabeth Frum; Catherine Corrothers m. William Frum; Rebecca Corrothers m. Moses Kinkaid; Jane Corrothers m. James Gray;and, Mary Corrothers m. David W. Jones.
I, Cheryl, Chris and Ken are descended from Robert. Howard is descended from John Jr. Bob and Tom are descended from Mary. Collectively we all seem interested in pursuing Monongalia Johns ancestors back as far as we possibly can. That has been my goal since I started back in 1959 and I have had considerable sucess. The Carruthers name originated in County Dumfries in the mid 1200's. How it got from there to County Londonderry Ireland I can only guess at. I have my Grandmother Corothers family Strang traced back to County Stirling in 1790. My mother's families Hand & Burns are from the Townlands of Collops in County Cavan and Greaphlone in County Monaghan, Ireland in the1820's.
My Great Gandfather's will stated that he was born in 1811 in Monogahelea County Virginia
My first contact in Monongalia Co. in 1959 was Lou Dent Frum. Her husband was a descendant of Catherine Corrothers and William Frum. She gave me clues and other contacts.
My second contact was Robert (Bob) Corrothers of 11 Wilson Ave. Morgantown. From him I obtained a typed copy of what he called the "old transcript." He described it as old and yellowed paper. The last date on it is Jan.1, 1868. I have Henry dying of Feb. 7, 1861. I think his family was writing down items as they remembered them. It is the main document I have tried to follow back. It follows:
Old Transcript
Great Great Grandfather
John Corrothers lived and died near Derry, Province of Ulster, Ireland. There is only one incident of his life that we are acquainted with. He served as a sailor on the British Fleet under Admiral Boscawen and was taken prisoner by the French near Gibralter, about the year 1759. He was kept in a French prison for years. When he returned home, he came destitute of clothing having only a piece of an old rug which he wrapped around him.
He married a Miss Sommerville of Londonderry, Ireland. She was of Danish descent, her ancestors came to the British Iles with William the Conqueror at the time of the Norman Conquest.
Great Grandfather
John Corrothers was born near Londonderry, Ireland in the year 1759. At the age of 14 he left home and entered on a sea faring life. He was under Admiral Rodney during his celebrated West Indies Cruise. He was present at the great naval engagement of April 12, 1782 when Rodney defeated the French and took Count De Grasse prisoner. He was married in 1785 to Catherine McCalla. He emigrated from Londonderry in August and after a six week voyage landed at Wilmington, Deleware in Oct. 1789. He settled on Crooked Run in Green County, Pa. From thence he moved to Indian Creek in Monongalia Co., W. Va. Thence the neighborhood of Smithtown in same County. He died Aug. 15, 1834. He had 9 children, Henry, Elizabeth, John, Andrew, Catherine, Rebecca, Jane, Robert and Mary.
Henry Corrothers
Born in Ireland and married Sarah Lour. Decendants living in Marion Co., W. Va. Elizabeth Corrothers Married Philip Huiffman died July 11, 1832 of Cholera Lightpolis, Fairfield Co. Ohio. Descendants living in Ohio. John Corrothers died in Lewis Co., W. Va. Andrew Corrothers married to Elizabeth Frum in Monongalia Co. died in Taylor Co. Catherine Corrothers married to William Frum died June 24, 1857. Jane Corrothers married to Jas. Gray died prematurely. Rebeca Corrothers married to Moses Kincaid died Jan.1, 1868.
Is it the gospel truth? Not really. It was written 110 years after 1759 and is as they remembered it. Full of good clues to follow which I have. Not that I have finished. My Grandmother Margaret Corothers wrote a family history in 1935 from what she remembered her mother and father telling her; and, she lived with my Great Grandmother Martha Jane Corothers for two years before she passed on. She was writing about 1840 in Scotland and early Iowa. I have found that the story is generally true but may be about the wrong people or a different time. I think we have the same case in this story. It is up to us to straighten it out.
Well it is time for me to feed my dogs and myself.
Good hunting!
Jack

Unfortunately this is not a direct branch of my line, but a descendant of my 5th Gr Grandfather Jeremiah Woodman. I got the information on a download from Ancestry.com. That file shows that they were married in Richland County WI on October 10 1868. Sophrona'a parents are Charles Gould Campbell and Matilda Woodman(March 15, 1824 to March 30, 1917), Matildas parents are Jeremiah Woodman(June 26, 1795 to May 11, 1867) and Cynthia Dillin(March 03, 1801 to August 09, 1883 at Wolfe Island Ontario). I am sorry I can't be of more help.

28 Juie Hoggan (Email of August 21, 2007 to Ken Runquist), August 21, 2007. Hi
My name is Judith Anne Hoggan. My mother is Beverly Eleanor Crothers Hoggan. Her father was Loyd V. Crothers, and her mother was Eathel May Tuel Crothers.
I can add some information. Also, the two children listed as my mothers are actually her brother's children. I can give you the spouses names, and the children's names for all of Loyd and Eathel Crothers' children.
So great to read this information, much of which I never knew!
Blessings to you and all your family, and Peace, Love, Joy and deep Laughter,
Judie

Good afternoon Cousin Ken:
It is great to receive your response and all the additional information. So, we're " half third cousins once removed"-- how does anyone ever figure these things out?!
Loyd V. Crothers had four children, as shown on the Internet.
Elizabeth Crothers married Earl Edwards (he passed away about 10 years ago) and they had two children, Linda and Ron. Linda married Robert Halliwell, and they had two children, Brian and Craig. Each of these sons married and have children--I'll have to get the details from my cousin Linda. Ron married Shirley and they had two children, Kelly and Christie. Both Kelly and Christie have married and have children--again, I'll have to get the details from my cousins.
Beverly Eleanor Crothers (8-26-28) married James Heber Hoggan (my parents) (Jim was born 4-10-28, and passed away on April 30, 2006), and they had three children, Mary Ellen (4-14-47), Judith Anne (10-3-51), and Nancy Kim (1-8-64). Mary Ellen married Alexander Harvey Watts (whose parents are from Canada), and they have a son, Harvey Kyle Watts (2-20-77), who is still unmarried at age 29; they were divorced and she is now married to Donald Neslund, with no children of their marriage. I married John Calvin Walters, divorced, and am now married to James Elwood Brown, and I never had children. Nancy married Steve Linn, divorced, has not remarried and has no children.
Don Loyd Crothers (passed away in February 2006) married Annie and they had five children, Joel, Sean, Dorothy, Charlotte, and Helen. Each of them married and had children, but I'll have to get details, if you'd like them
William Loyd Crothers never married. He currently lives in Mexico City.
I can obtain birth dates and additional information if you have any interest.
Thanks so much for writing! This family history is so fascinating. I have very little to go on for my Father's side. By the way, Loyd V. Crothers was a building contractor for many years, and in his youth was a cowboy. Extremely bright man. Blessings to you and your family, and great Laughter, Judie

42 John "Jack" Corothers, Clear Lake, South Dakota [(E-ADDRESS FOR PRIVATE USE),] to Ken Runquist, e-mail, Jan 02 2003, "Your Email to Me"; privately held by Runquist; What I sent to Cheryl was not that Catherine Sommerville. All I have is "he married a Miss Sommerville." Taken from Robert Carruthers of Morgantown, WV "Old Transcript." I think Cheryl probaly transposed from their son John's wife Catherine McCalla.
Martha Jane Smith birthplace comes from my Grandmother Corothers family history as she remembered it as Jefferson twp., Montgomery Co. Ohio which really thru me off track. It was years before I found out that Martha Jane's parents were Abraham Smith & Martha Ann McNeil. They were married in Butler Co. Ohio and are in the Butler Co. marriage records as are Martha Ann's sisters and brothers. Most of the McNeils moved up to the Carroll Co. IN when our Martha Jane was but a little girl. Martha Ann's younger sister Ruth was born Oct.15,1809 in Bedford Co., PA according to a write up of William H. Weaver in the "History of Carroll Co." Indiana. I do not know who their father was. Bedford Co. was Rev. War Bounty Land. I do know a Hector McNeil served in the War and there is a Hector McNeil in the 1783/4 tax lists for Bedford Twp. of Bedford Co. Hector was on the rolls June 15 & Dec. 20, 1775 of Capt. Nicholson Broughton's Company of Col. John Glovers Reg. Two years later he was in a gun crew on the frigate USS Boston commanded by his father Capt. Hector McNeill.
I started through your website once but stalled out.
I am as far as enclosure 9 on back grounding Chris for Ireland research
On Dec.4th I received a letter from Rex Hutson of Worthington, OH. He is a decendent of John W. Carruthers. John W. is a brother of Rawley's father Robert. His email is howdhutson@cs.com <mailto:howdhutson@cs.com>. Had a short email back on the 13th.
Well it is time to feed myself and the dogs. Did I ever ask what G program you use? I have a Family Tree Maker v10. Filling it out is my problem!!!!
